Counterpoint: The "AI Lords" as indicated in this article can easily ignore the permanent underclass, because once we realized we were close to a society similar to a pressure cooker with no release valve, we just built a more-steam resistant cooker, powered by Flock cameras, less privacy, less political voices and options, and more importantly, a police/military/authocratic class strata with somewhat better living conditions and complete control of the mass media.
We can already see in the French and Italian revolts of the last few days - Yes, a few shops have been destroyed but the narrative is fully in the hand of their respective governments, which are already planning towards a more militarized approach to policing.
They don't have to give up anything, the system is sufficiently sclerotized to keep going with a progressive worsening of the biggest part of society for years to come with no ill effects for those in power.
Decades of global warming will probably cause the societal issues expressed in the article, slowly, but I wouldn't hold my breath while things may or may not improve in the future.
