I was thinking how the OneDrive/Google drive cloud storage offers can be easily emulated by LLM + S3 compatible storage.
You can write a 10 lines skill file that basically says "when I ask you to upload a file, use this API key to upload it to the best suited path on my bucket"
What's changed since then is AI can handle that shit for you. As a nerd, sure, I can scp to a Linux server, but with AI I just need to give it control of my computer and it can deal with the details. Meta's Muse is amazing as a product, despite some teething issues.
There's already been multiple stories of AI deleting the code and the production database and the backups, but people are still YOLO-ing despite that. So you're right and it's not gonna stop people.
OneDrive 2TB family: ~150/year. You can have such computer at home for 200usd I guess (used Wyse terminal with USB drive) The only reason people pay for cloud is that it is integrated into OSes (like Google cloud into android) and it is virtually impossible to get similar integration with a custom own cloud
What happens to an existing subscription of 6 people with 500GB stored each?
Does Microsoft have an existing policy for a reduction of storage tiers? So your data effectively become read-only until you bring your total usage under 2TB? Are files deleted after a certain deadline? What a terrible article with no useful details.
"Will I receive any additional storage during the transition to shared storage?
Existing Microsoft 365 Family and Premium customers who meet eligibility requirements in supported markets might receive bonus storage when their subscription renews after shared storage rolls out.

What happens if my family uses more than the storage quota?
You don't immediately lose access to your files. If your subscription approaches the 2 TB limit, you'll receive notifications so that you can plan ahead. You can free up space, purchase additional storage, upgrade your subscription, or take other steps to avoid disruption. If your subscription exceeds the limit, you can continue to access your files for up to one year while you manage your storage."
Wonder what those supported markets are. Also note the hilarious framing instead of plainly saying that storage media has become more expensive:
"Why is Microsoft making this change?
The goal is to provide a more flexible experience. Shared storage helps ensure that one person doesn't run out of space while other members have unused storage available."
Both of their customers are going to be rightfully outraged.

The canonical list of "Famous last words" just got a new member.

Uploading the files isn't the issue. Downloading them back is.
