There are a lot of people in this group who are "house rich, cash poor", they may have a $500k home and $500k in their 401k, but they don't have $1 million in cash on hand. That's something you might access for an emergency or to cover costs for serious health issues, but it's not the sort of capital you dip into for much less than that.
Medical care in the US is insanely expensive, but also -- at least in some parts of the country -- it can be difficult to get at any price. Good luck finding a doctor that is taking new patients at all in my part of the country.

That's not a given at all. I know people who have avoided going to the doctor for painful infections because of the cost. I've done the same myself.
"Trouble breathing" is an interesting thing, because there have been more than one instance in my city of people who didn't avoid going to the doctor but did die because they couldn't afford the ongoing care their conditions required.

I stop medications on a regular basis. I found out on Thanksgiving last year that stopping my BP medication was a real bad idea, and that I was also diabetic enough to need all the management rigmarole that goes with it.
In the mental arena, I'm 100% glad I've stopped all medications, and I feel so mentally good that I can confidently tell my psychiatrist to get stuffed, each and every time, and they really, really give the hard sell on medications there. Sure, I can expect BP and diabetes to put me on meds as I age, but nobody needs psych meds for any good purpose, and there's no relapse or decline that would change my mind.
