I'm assuming this is about resistance to Liquid Glass making people unwilling to update , although of course I could be wrong! If it is that, then it seems like it would have been simpler to just have an on-off switch for LG in iOS 24. But maybe LG is baked in too deep.
18.7.8 iOS and iPadOS are available for most devices too as of 4 days ago. I guess the gist is that not everyone wants to be forced onto liquid glass and worse performance balanced by the downside of vulnerabilities of missing security updates, but Apple relented to support the current and previous major OS versions as they traditionally did. It was an underhanded rug pull to stop supporting an OS on numerous products without warning. I anticipate support of 18 will cease when 27 arrives in 4-6 months, which will be sad.
I’m on a 16 pro and I’m holding out on 18 as long as I can. I have not heard a single positive review of 26 from people I trust. I usually update Apple stuff as soon as I can, so this is a departure for me.
"Note: We enabled the availability of iOS 18.7.7 for more devices on April 1, 2026, so users with Automatic Updates turned on can automatically receive important security protections from web attacks called DarkSword. The fixes associated with the DarkSword exploit first shipped in 2025."
