The manager of the company I worked for, about 12 years ago, told me that I had to sign a new contract of employment, as the company were changing the working hours and pay schedule.
I said No.
I went to see a solicitor. An employer cannot force you to sign a new contract.
When you start any job, you sign a contract of employment. An employer cannot just change that contract to suit their own needs. they cannot just impose a new working schedule, pay less wages, or make you work more hours, that are not specifically set out in the original contract of employment.
If that was the case they could make you work 16 hours a day and pay you a loaf of bread and a mug of water.
I stayed in my job, went to work every day, until eventually they asked me to leave. I said no. They had to pay me £20,000 to get rid of me. Wankers.
thing is, I was the only employee of about 20 of us who refused to sign the new contract. the rest had to work longer hours for less pay. Mugs!
This is why you need a unionised work force.
Its the reason why, the conservatives, under Maggie thatched-roof tory cunt, killed our unions for the sole benefit of big business.
Most US States have "at will employment" meaning they can dismiss you for whatever reason barring a few protected ones like racism.
So yeah they can do that there, there are no protections. Maybe they can't force you to sign a new contract but then they'll just end your current one and let you go.
We really have things good here in Europe. Unions are only part of it and I personally prefer legal protection because it applies to everyone, not just industries that are unionised. In Holland the unions are kinda compromised anyway in the neoliberal "poldermodel" which means they rub shoulders with the execs and work together. I don't think opposing forces should do that.
